Aston Villa win 3-1 at Sevilla in the XV Trofeo Antonio Puerta

Alejandro Garnacho: Villa have signed a carrier, not a finisher

Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal in a Villa shirt at Sevilla, in his first start for the club. The numbers behind him tell a clear story: he is one of the most productive ball-carriers in the Premier League and one of its least efficient finishers. Unai Emery can only fix one of those, and it is the one that matters.

The story in brief

  • Alejandro Garnacho scored at Sevilla in his first start for Aston Villa, having played just 31 competitive minutes all season.
  • He averaged 11.9 carries per game last season, more than any player at Chelsea or Villa, and ranked third in the Premier League for chances created from carries.
  • His finishing is the problem: six goals from 8.07 expected goals, and two assists from 4.7 expected assists.

Garnacho generates danger better than almost anyone. Converting it has always been the issue.
