At the end of what proved to be a relatively straightforward night for Aston Villa, the biggest post-match talking point centred around someone who hadn’t even kicked a ball.
Alejandro Garnacho not featuring at the CBS Arena felt scarcely believable before the game. This, after all, was the perfect opportunity to blood those summer signings who Unai Emery had so far been reluctant to hand minutes to this campaign.
And that is exactly how events transpired at Coventry City, with seven changes, three full debutants and just a second substitute appearance for record signing Johan Manzambi. But for whatever reason, Emery felt this was not the time for Garnacho. For the second game in a row, watched from the bench as all five substitutes were deployed.
