Aston Villa endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 season following a whirlwind summer of transfer activity.

Given the level of reconstruction, there has been sympathy for Unai Emery in the opening weeks of the campaign. That there were steady signs of improvement also helped.

Villa ended the opening spell of the season with a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur - their first in the Premier League this term - and will look to build on that when Brentford travel to Villa Park on Saturday. But the goodwill afforded to the team in the early weeks of the campaign may be in short supply if the performances dip again.
