In most circumstances, a trip to Coventry City would be an enticing proposition for Aston Villa fans.
This was once a staple fixture in the calendar, but the West Midlands clubs have not locked horns in a quarter of a century. How ironic then, that when the sides are finally paired together in the cup, it comes less than two months before they are finally set to clash in the league once again.
Like most West Midlands clubs, beating Villa would rank among Coventry’s season highlights, especially if their woeful form continues. “I know this is a game that the fans hold dear and they haven't had so many of these in recent years,” said Frank Lampard ahead of the game.
