Aston Villa progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday with a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over Coventry City.
A Tammy Abraham brace, either side of a Ross Barkley header, ensured Villa won the first meeting between the West Midlands clubs in 25 years. That long build-up was rewarded with an exciting, open first half, but when Villa established a two-goal lead just before the hour, it all but killed off the tie.
Victor Torp’s excellent free-kick did briefly get Coventry back on level terms during the first period, even if Villa's place in the last-16 never looked under threat.
