Unai Emery admitted Aston Villa “needed” a first Premier League win of the season before the international break as his side have “struggled” in the opening weeks of the campaign.

It’s a blunt assessment few supporters will disagree with. Villa had picked up just a solitary point from the opening four Premier League matches and managed only one shot on target across the first three of those.

There have been recent signs of improvement, however, with cup victories over Club Brugge and Coventry City offering encouragement, yet a first three points of the season will feel particularly satisfying, and ease any tension around Bodymoor Heath during the three-week hiatus.
