Villa's missed cup opportunity leaves a familiar frustration for supporters

A 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth underlined two areas Unai Emery must still address.

The perception of Aston Villa’s strength in depth differed greatly before and after the midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Bournemouth.

The 3-0 loss revealed many truths about this current new-look Villa, the biggest of which is how little regard Emery holds the competition in. The sight of John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara laughing with international colleagues after the full-time whistle epitomised how far down the pecking order this game sat.

Emery’s line-up was the ultimate proof. Pau Torres and Nicolas Jackson were afforded the night off, as was Johan Manzambi, although Villa fans will fear that selection was more due to injury than rotation.
