Aston Villa’s Jersey Mike’s Trophy campaign ended in defeat on Tuesday night as they lost 3-2 to Blackpool in their final group game.

The Villans young guns had known ahead of kick-off that, regardless of the result in the North West, this would be their third and final match in the tournament. Previous defeats to Wigan Athletic and Crewe Alexander had put paid to any hopes of progression to the next round.

Perhaps the somewhat irrelevant feel to the occasion was the cause of Villa’s sluggish start. Blackpool should have capitalised when they produced four shots on target in the opening six minutes, the best of which fell to Dion Charles, who fired straight at James Wright.
