Nicolas Jackson is the Premier League's best all-round centre-forward - £65m could prove a bargain

The Aston Villa star scored twice against Manchester City, but offered so much more to the team's offensive patterns. His signing has revolutionised Unai Emery's attack.

There’s one golden rule at Aston Villa: Never, ever, doubt Unai Emery.

His judgment is rarely wide of the mark. Often, his decisions feel almost prophetic.

Yet, when Villa committed to pay up to £65 million for Nicolas Jackson last summer, there was some unease among the fanbase. It wasn’t helped by the state of flux in which Villa were operating, and the general uncertainty surrounding the club in that period.

When the reliable Ollie Watkins left, that was heightened. Villa needed to acquire a prolific replacement, a guarantee of goals at Premier League and Champions League level. For many, Jackson, who was so profligate at Chelsea, was not the answer.
