Deadline-day exits reshape the youth ranks
Before kick-off, Villa's youth setup had already changed shape. Deadline day, on 1 September, saw a cluster of young players head out on loan. Aidan Borland, the highly rated 19-year-old midfielder, joined Accrington Stanley in League Two. Bradley Burrowes, an England youth winger, moved to Wigan Athletic (providing already an assist into the 3-1 win for the Latics over MK Dons seconds after his debut from the bench). Meanwhile, Luka Lynch secured a switch to Oxford United, and Joshua Feeney joined Peterborough United. Tommi O'Reilly, too, departed for Doncaster Rovers. They followed earlier summer loan exits for the likes of Zepiqueno Redmond, Kadan Young and Sam Proctor, leaving the group markedly leaner. In all, the summer stripped out a swathe of the club's brightest prospects.
