Unai Emery: Even after 6 goals, the manager still talks about chances conceded

Aston Villa won 6-0 and Unai Emery spent his press conference discussing the scoring opportunities they gave away.

The story in brief

  • Unai Emery said Villa conceded more than he expected in a first half they led 3-0.
  • He described the result as "very, very damaging" for Fenerbahçe and said they "maybe didn't deserve those six goals".
  • His assessment of Nicolas Jackson contained an instruction, and an unprompted mention of Brian Madjo.

A manager unconvinced by his own scoreline

Most managers handed a 6-0 in the Champions League would permit themselves an evening of unqualified pleasure. Unai Emery, characteristically, did not. Asked to assess the night, he began by setting out what he had wanted from it, and the first item was blunt about recent form at Villa Park.
