“Here’s to you Unai Emery, Villa loves you more than you can know.”

Those words boomed around Villa Park at the conclusion of Wednesday’s game. It perfectly encapsulated the triumphant mood as Emery’s side recorded a second convincing Champions League win in the space of a week.

Briefly Aston Villa had been first in the 36-team league - but at the end of the third gameweek, had to settle for second place. Such are the setbacks fans now face.

The 3-1 victory over Viking was Villa’s 12th consecutive European home win - Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson are the only other Premier League managers to achieve that feat since the turn of the century.
