Aston Villa Player Celebrates on the Pitch

Aston Villa 2-2 Brentford: Post-match verdict

There were further signs of Villa's development this season, even if Unai Emery's demand to return to winning ways at home went unanswered.

Aston Villa returned to Premier League action with a pulsating, frenzied contest against Brentford on Saturday.

Three weeks on the training ground, at least for those not involved in international fixtures, has seemingly made an impact. This was Villa’s most encouraging attacking display of the Premier League season so far, with a front four of John McGinn, Johan Manzambi, Emiliano Bunedia and Nicolas Jackson interchanging positions and linking well.

Two of those - Jackson and McGinn - found the back of the net. If not for a spirited Brentford side, Villa would have taken all three points. But Keith Andrews’ hoodoo over the Villans continues, and goals from Yehor Yarmolyuk and Kristoffer Ajer earned the visitors a point.
