Sunday’s walloping at Brighton was a demoralising start to the new season, raising serious concerns about what the next nine months has in store. An optimist will feel the only way is up, and reinforcements are expected in the transfer window over the coming eight days, but the shambolic display on the south coast is far from ideal for a team looking to lay down a marker at the start of a new era.
