Sunday was supposed to mark the start of a bright new era for Aston Villa. It proved to be anything but.
Much has been written and said about the plethora of outgoing Villa stars this summer - a list that will likely increase before September’s deadline - but despite the repeated blows, there has been a sense of optimism around the club’s future.
Of Unai Emery’s six summer signings, five are aged 25 and younger, while youngsters George Hemmings, Brian Madjo and Modou Keba Cisse are expected to play some role at first-team level this term.
Further additions are expected, too. Based on the performance at the Amex, that is a necessity.
