Nicolas Jackson celebrates goal with thumbs-up

Villa 2-1 Man City: Post-match verdict

A win to silence any remaining doubts about the direction of this Aston Villa side, as Manchester City's winning start to the season comes to a juddering halt at Villa Park.

Aston Villa’s season continues to go from strength to strength, with Saturday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City further proof of the team’s progression under Unai Emery.

The Villa boss said pre-match he wouldn’t celebrate the four-year anniversary of his appointment, which fell conveniently on Saturday. Victory was the only reward the Basque had in mind.

That was secured in rip-roaring fashion against a City side that had won all of their previous seven Premier League matches this season. But a Nicolas Jackson brace put paid to that record.

He scored in both halves, either side of an Erling Haaland header, to ensure Villa’s unbeaten run now stretches to seven games.
