No excuses: a genuine slap in the face
There is no dressing this up. Villa conceded four inside 31 minutes, lost a debutant to a red card, and never mustered a shot on target. Frankly, it was abject. Some supporters will reach instinctively for mitigation, and a few excuses do exist. Ollie Watkins wasn't involved, Emilian Buendía played as a makeshift striker, and the summer stripped the squad of experience. Still, none of that explains the manner of it. The defending looked disorganised, the discipline poor, and the energy strangely flat. Above all, a proud club does not want to open a season looking so meek.
