Konsa, Martinez & Watkins sales have changed the tone of Villa's summer

In mid-August, Aston Villa’s transfer window was in a state of limbo.
The exits of Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne were significant, but replacements had been secured and Unai Emery’s squad, while somewhat weakened, felt refreshed. It was unclear, at that stage, whether supporters should feel hopeful or anxious.
The last 10 days have changed that mood. Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins departing has moved the needle. This no longer feels like a few pieces being moved around the board; instead, the game has started anew.
Let’s not forget, in addition to the six aforementioned players, Jadon Sancho and Douglas Luiz are no longer options. Andres Garcia and Evann Guessand, fringe members last season, aren’t around either, while Amadou Onana’s knee injury will keep him out for the majority of the campaign. That’s an entire XI that Emery has essentially lost.
