Matteo Ruggeri: Why he starts against Brentford whatever Matty Cash's scan says

Cash is a right-back, so his dead leg has no bearing on Ruggeri's selection. With Ian Maatsen out until late October, Ruggeri is the only fit senior left-back at the club. What matters is the matchup: Brentford engineer most of their attacks down their right, carry the division's highest set-piece xG, and Ruggeri's one elite trait is aerial.

The story in brief

  • Matty Cash plays right-back, so his dead leg has no bearing on whether Matteo Ruggeri starts.
  • Ruggeri is Villa's only fit senior left-back with Ian Maatsen out until late October.
  • Brentford engineer most of their attacking overloads down their right, which is exactly where Ruggeri will be standing.

The Cash injury changes Villa's right side. Ruggeri was always starting on the left.
